Artist Statement for Modern Odysseys; Heroic Journeys we make Everyday

In 1993 I received a grant from Metro Transit in Seattle to be part of an ambitious project that included multiple disciplines exploring the same concept; the process of commuting back and forth daily from home to work.  We were not given any bias on how to explore this idea. The art disciplines involved in this grant included dance, painting, music, film, writing, and myself, a photographer.

The ritual aspect of daily migration interested me, so I chose to explore my work in a myth structure.  I choose dancers from various Seattle dance companies including Cabbie Mitchell from Pacific Northwest Ballet and Wade Madsen to collaborate with. I choreographed and staged various scenes that explored who the gods and goddesses might be and what services they would provide for the benefit of the heroic commuters.

The finished prints are silver base, with oil paint and pencil added.

This work appeared in the book Modern Odyssey's, was featured in the movie, and was exhibited at The Bellevue Art Museum before becoming part of Metro Transits permanent art collection.
